Case Study

Diamond Wire Supply for Mooring Chain Cutting (ROV / Offshore)

Client

Mactech Offshore USA

Project

Mooring Chain Cutting

Industry

Subsea Decommissioning

Overview

An offshore client required a reliable solution for cutting 5.5” mooring chain as part of a deepwater project. The work was carried out from a supply vessel, with the client acting as the primary contractor responsible for the vessel, ROV operations and overall execution of the cutting scope.

To support the operation, Diaquip supplied specialist diamond wire consumables to Mactech Offshore USA, who delivered the cutting equipment, technicians and operational support required for the offshore campaign.

The Challenge

This was a high-stakes offshore operation where reliability was key. The designed strength of Diaquip’s loops ensured consistent performance on site, helping to avoid delays while supporting reliable performance throughout the operation.
The project required approximately 12 mooring chain cuts to be carried out in deepwater conditions using ROV-operated cutting equipment. The system needed to be robust, reliable and fully compatible with subsea operations.

Equipment also needed to be delivered ahead of mobilization to allow sufficient time for integration of ROV hotstabs, system validation and operational testing. In addition, the client required testing and training to ensure technicians were fully prepared prior to deployment offshore.

The Solution

Diaquip supplied diamond wire loops to Mactech Offshore USA for use with their 24” Cutoff Diamond Wire Saw systems, which were configured with ROV handles and chain hooks specifically for mooring chain cutting.

Mactech Offshore USA reviewed the project requirements and deployed two technicians to support the cutting program. Their role included maintaining the saws, managing wire changes and ensuring reliable operation throughout the offshore campaign.

Testing was conducted both at the Mactech Offshore USA facility and on site to validate system performance and confirm compatibility with the ROV configuration. This process also allowed the client’s team to complete the required training before mobilization.

Key project milestones included diver fit testing, equipment validation, mobilization to the vessel and test cutting prior to the offshore cutting operations in early July.

The Result

The collaboration between Diaquip and Mactech Offshore USA ensured the client had the equipment, consumables and technical support required to successfully complete the offshore cutting scope.

By supplying high-performance diamond wire loops for the program, Diaquip helped support continuous cutting operations while reducing the risk of downtime during the offshore campaign.

The structured testing program and technician support also ensured the cutting system was fully validated and operators were confident in its performance before mobilization offshore.
